The 30-Second Hiccup Cure                                                                                                  (En Español)  (Dhivehi Language)

For overall best results, please try to do the steps as quickly as you can and try very hard not to let any air out.
Step 1: Start by inhaling through your mouth until your lungs feel full (when it feels like you cannot inhale any more.... your lungs will basically stop taking in air).

Step 2: Swallow. You are not really swallowing anything but it seems that without this act, it doesn’t work.  Do not let any air out.

Step 3: Now inhale some more until your lungs feel full again. You may not be able to inhale a lot, but do get some more air in. It will start to get difficult to do this as you go, but keep trying. You obviously can’t suck in as much air as you did initially, but just a little will do (think of it as taking a “sip” of air but directly into your lungs).

Step 4: Swallow again. This too will start to get difficult as you go.  Do not let any air out.

Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 (inhale and swallow) until you cannot swallow again. While it seems you can almost always suck in just a little more air, it is actually the swallowing that gets to be impossible. When you feel like you cannot swallow again, swallow again anyway. It will be hard to do, your face will probably turn red, and you may make squeaking sounds. But you CAN swallow one last time. By this time, your lungs should also be quite full and it should be difficult to get much more air in as well. While you should try not to let any air out, if you have really repeated steps 3 and 4 as many times as you can, you probably will end up letting a little air out before you can take that last swallow. If you find that air keeps escaping out of your nose even early in the process, try squeezing it shut with your fingers.
Step 6: Exhale.

If done correctly, the whole process should take around 30 seconds, and your hiccups will be gone. This has never failed me, and from the testimonials below, it seems to work for many people. I believe that for those that it does not work for, they are not repeating steps 3 and 4 as many times as they can. When you think you cannot possibly swallow again, try to do it anyway; same goes for inhaling. It also seems that not letting any air out during the process is important. If you hiccup while trying to do this, try not to exhale after the hiccup (the hiccup will force more air IN, working with you). If you do let air out, it is best to start over from step 1. It has also been reported by one visitor of this site that it seemed to work better standing (particularly as opposed to laying down), but I have done it successfully both standing and sitting down. Your experience may vary.

I have been doing this many years, and it always works for me. This is similar to another cure I have heard, which is to hold your breath. That alone has never worked for me. Somehow I got the idea to add swallowing to it, and the result was success. An interesting side-effect is that (for me at least) for around 15 or 20 seconds after doing this, you feel like you want to hiccup, but it never happens. I am not sure if this is because you expect to hiccup again or what, but the nice thing is the hiccups do not return.

If you have tried this and it does not work, I suggest repeating steps 3 and 4 at least one more time than you were able to originally. And of course, while it does seem to work for almost everyone I have told, it is possible that it will not work for everybody. Although I personally feel that the problem is not the method, but rather the execution of it; of course I am a bit biased. :)

If you have tried this and it DID work for you, great! I would love to hear about it too, so submit a testimonial and let me know. I will add it to the testimonials below just as soon as I can. Some of those who have written suggested that I find a way to charge for this cure. Before adding my cure to the internet, I had a look around at some of the other ”cures” available. Believe it or not, I came across one that actually did require you to pay before receiving the cure - which may not even work! I will not charge any money for my cure, although I will take PayPal Donations if you feel so inclined.

Zucchini Fritters with Tzatziki

Zucchini Fritters with Tzatziki

Serves 2, Yield=6

2 cups coarsely grated zucchini
1/2 cup coarsely grated potato
kosher salt
pinch of flour
1 egg
1 tablespoon chopped chives (or whatever herb you like)
1 tablespoon chopped mint (or whatever herb you like)
zest of one lemon
1/4 cup diced white onion
1 tablespoon unsalted butter

Tzatziki:
1 cup Greek yogurt
2 T. finely diced red onion
1 T. chopped mint
kosher salt
squeeze of lemon juice

1. Place the grated zucchini and potato in a colander. Spread the veggies out to allow for maximum surface area exposure and sprinkle all over with kosher salt. Let sit for at least 30 minutes to drain.

2. Meanwhile, make the tzatziki, if desired: Stir together yogurt, onion, mint, salt and lemon juice. Taste. Add more salt if necessary. Chill until ready to use.

3. After the 30 minutes, squeeze veggies out and wrap in paper towels. Squeeze again. [Note: The veggies will not drain out enough liquid on their own in the collander, so squeezing them with a paper towel is a critical step to mopping up that moisture.] Open up the paper towel and spread out your veggies. Sprinkle with a pinch of flour to soak up leftover moisture.

4. In a bowl, whisk together egg, herbs and lemon zest. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add onion and grated zucchini-potato mixture. Stir well.

5. Preheat over to 200˚F. Place a foil-lined cookie sheet in the oven. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter. When foam subsides, drop a spoonful of your fritter batter in. Gently pat with a spatula to flatten out the fritters, which will help make them crispy.

6. Cook about 3 fritters at a time until golden brown on each side. Place fritters in the oven while you make additional pancakes. Serve as soon as possible with tzatziki on the side.

Sweet and Sour meatballs

SWEET-AND-SOUR MEATBALLS
Meatballs may be thoroughly cooked without sauce and frozen. Thaw and reheat with sauce.

YIELD: 3 1/2 dozen (serving size: 1 meatball)
Ingredients
3/4 pound extra-lean ground beef
3/4 pound ground turkey
1 small onion, minced
1/4 cup egg substitute
1/2 cup Italian-seasoned breadcrumbs
----or substitute dried whole wheat breadcumbs
3/4 cup ketchup
1/3 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup low-sodium Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons sugar
--- or substitute honey
2 teaspoons dry mustard

Preparation
Combine first 5 ingredients; shape mixture into 1-inch balls.

Brown meatballs, in batches, in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Remove meatballs from skillet, and wipe skillet clean. Stir together ketchup and next 4 ingredients in skillet; bring to a boil.

Add meatballs, reduce heat, and simmer 5 minutes or until meatballs are no longer pink.

Cheese Fondue

Here is a recipe that I used in making my first cheese fondue. It won't be my last...

The chef uses a combination of Vacherin Fribourgeois and slightly aged Gruyère. You could use whatever is available. Avoid a dry, well-aged cheese as they tend to be rather salty. Use cheeses that are less than one year old. There’s some notes at the end of the recipe.

The bread we dipped was dense white bread with a nice crust. Whatever you use, it should be thick-cut and on the drier side but not crispy. When the fondue is finished, the hardened cheese at the bottom of the pot, called la religieuse is considered the reward for finishing it—it’s considered the reward for getting through it!

1 1/2 to 2 cups (375ml-500ml) dry white wine
3 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
2 teaspoons potato starch or cornstarch
1 1/2 pounds (700g) mixed grated cheese, such as Gruyère and Emmenthal (see headnote & note)

optional: 1 to 2 teaspoons kirsch

1. In a sturdy pot, add 1 1/2 (375ml) cup white wine, the garlic and the starch.

2. Add the grated cheese and cook over moderately-high heat, stirring often, until the cheese is melted and smooth. The fondue is done, according the the chef, “When the mixture leaves a skin in the hole of the spoon.” (See photo in post.)

3. If the mixture is too thick, add up to 1/2 cup (125ml) more white wine until its texture is to your liking. If you wish, add the kirsch.

4. Serve warm, preferably in a fondue pot.

Here is a forgotten recipe. A few changes, I have made.

You can cook this for up to 3 hours, I would suggest 2 and then monitor with adding wine/water mixture.
The chief mentions that the mushrooms disintegrate. I never had this happen, but would suggest leaving them as part of the dish, and not to discard.
I used whipping cream for this recipe, as it is not specified in the video.

The social network, staring Jesse Eisenberg, was a brief history to the facebook saga. Originally called Harvard social club, then TheFacebook and finally facebook. It must be mentioned that Justin Timberlake plays the MP3 villain Sean Parker. I never new the story around the lawsuits, nor the beginnings of Facebook, which this movie played out excellently. Mostly the story of Mark Zuckerberg is one of accidents and imagination, without a business plan, but was lucky in the end, and kept a low profile.

I absolutely love my kindle. I like the display, how it is so easy to look at, and read. The Kindle is light weight, with a full, yet small, keyboard which is easy to use. I would have liked a mouse, or other pointing option then the arrow keys, but we aren't suppose to be surfing the web with it. I think the battery life, is like 20 years, but hey, why can't cell phones have a longer battery life, if the kindle can?

Movie review of "The Losers"

This is a fast paced, great script and a well thought out plot of a comic book characters. If you have teen age children, take them to this movie. All of you will enjoy, and find it entertaining. With so many movies, that advertise just hype, and no backing to a good story "Cop out", this is far and away a worth while see.

Folks,
here is the get away, priced low, but a wonderful B&B in Beautiful Pennsylvania. I stayed in the Irrigation Room for our anniversary and were pleasantly surprised by it's quirky charm.

Using the outdoor toilet is certainly reminiscent of simpler times and the breakfast provided consisted of very generous servings and will be a highlight for bacon lovers!

Mose, I found it really comforting when you snuck into to our room and watched us sleep :)

So did the Oscars frustrate you? I think the academe got it right on, this year. With a majority of the Oscars going to "The Hurt Locker", and not "Avatar", it appears the judges are still watching movies, which can better the arts, and not just popular. While, I did not agree with all of the choices, I did agree with the top 4 awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Edit, Best Actor). I do love Sandra Bullock, but how can someone win best actress and in the same year make a movie such as "All about Steve"?

Basic Crepe recipe

So far the best recipe

1 1/2 c. milk
1 c. flour
Pinch of salt
1 egg
1 egg yolk
1 tbsp. melted butter

Sift the flour with the salt into a bowl. Make a well in the center and add the egg and egg yolk. Pour in the milk slowly, stirring constantly and, when half is added, stir in the melted butter. Beat well until smooth. Add the remaining milk, cover and let stand at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before using. The batter should be the consistency of light cream.

When cooking, tilt pan so that the batter spreads evenly over bottom. Cook until the bottom is golden brown, turn and repeat. Makes 18 crepes.

The Hurt Locker

The Hurt Locker, is one of the best movies I have seen this year. Unfortunately, it is not playing at many theaters, nor did it have much marketing. The performances by Jeremy Renner is fantastic, along with the other members in the elite bomb squad. It is a movie about the Iraq war, but one small pin point, in the whole war, not trying to say if the war is good or bad, just about these 3 people. One to watch.

So, everyone and their brother are reviewing Windows 7, so why shouldn't I. It is true, the good points which people are saying about Windows 7. It would be helpful though, for MS to provide a good tutorial, of all of the neat stuff, and how to perform them. Such as libraries, and how to edit them. I do find a few things such as incompatible drivers and apps. My Lenovo has many of these incompatibilities, such as Bluetooth and quick keys, which no longer work. What a pain!

6 oz. frozen orange juice concentrate

Well, it has been awhile since I wrote in my blog. Probably because I have been writing in Facebook and Twitter, and since many more people read those post, I havn't updated my blog in some time.
My trip to Singapore was long but enjoyable. I really liked the weather, food, cleaniness and just overall ease to get around the city. Some people might say, well it is too clean and orderly,w ell to all those people, "what do you want, shit on the streets?" So, that's my feelings, anyways.

I sat next to Frankie Valli, the singer from the four season's, on my way from Tampa to NYC today. Actually, I was asked to move my seat, and he was whom I sat next to. It wasn't until I saw that he was signing autographs, that I thought he must be a celebrity. Then when I asked what he did, he said we was with the four season's. I still did not recgonize him, and finally he said, "I'm Frankie Valli!" How Stupid am I?

So we had a long talk about divorce, he is getting one too. We agreed, men are on the short end of the stick, on divorce end.

Frankie has two twin boys, 14, who are now with their mother. I shared my pains, and we left shaking hands and understanding each others troubles.

Ironman movie review

So, here is the first summer classic movie, staring Robert Downey Jr. At first glance, Robert does not seem the super hero type, but nor did/does Tobey Maguire. Robert does attract attention, and unlike spiderman, he does change his personality as he transforms into Ironman. This will be a great see for the kids, as well as adults. A must see at the movie theater, and not the DVD, unless you have the $10k version with 5.1 dolby digital TV.

I am working in Istabul in May, for work. This is my first time to Istanbul, but not Turkey. From first impression, it is a cross between Barcelona and Budapest, but I have not been to so many European cities. I do find interesting that Istanbul's river Bosphorus separates Europe from Asian contenent. More posts to come from my visits here.

I compare this movie to "The Great Train Robbery", with Sean Connery. While the story jumped around quite a bit, I did enjoy the characters, and would have really enjoyed more story around the African. Not sure how much of the story is actually true, but to know that these thieves got away with a few million pounds almost 3 decades ago, made it compelling to watch.

Hello from Amsterdam. I am working here for a few months, so I thought I would write about my time here. I am actually working in Eindhoven, about 1.5 hours south of Amsterdam. It is a smaller city of course, then Amsterdam, but still represents the country quite well. The football team here is PSV, and is rivals with AJAX in Amsterdam.
My visit to Amsterdam, was my second time there, but since I was in AMS such a short time the first time, it is like a brand new city for me. Of course you have the Red Light district, and the coffee houses, but many fine museams. A wonderful city to walk around at night or during the day. I enjoyed the canels so far, and the overall scenery of the city. I will go back this weekend, and will write more about it.

Juno Movie Review

Juno is about a girl, who is still in high school, and gets pregnant. The story has a realistic tone, which is not usually found in any of today's movies, even TV. Juno's statements, being scarastic about her pregnancy and the father, is funny yet real.
I will give this my "Go see it" recommendation.

No country for old men

Another wonderful Coen brothers movie. I really was not expecting the western type of background, nor the 1980's era. There are so many items in the movie, that make it great, you don't realize them, until you are 1/2 into the movie. Great pace, character development, cinematogophy, the list can go on.

This movie couldn't have been very expensive to make, very little if any CGI, no long car chases, but lots of stunts. This movie is on par with Fargo, possible better for this age. I really loved it.

Budapest vacation

I am back from Budapest, on a well deserved vacation. Budapest has a few faults, such as the raising prices and horrible weather in the winter, but it's positives aspects far out way the negatives. The Parliament is beautiful, along with the national monuments.

Comparing to many other European countries, the people are quite friendly, and more then willing to assist out of townee's. They are not so proud, as to criticize other countries, but just let you enjoy what Hungary has to offer. In USA, we don't appreciate their wine, which we should. There are many vineyards which are worth trying, and enjoying with a great Hungarian meal. The cooking is by far, better then most would expect too. Even though many of the restaurants are expensive, the food is quite good, worthy of distinction.

Into the Wild

Another great movie, which I watched over the weekend. About a graduate student, who decides to give up everthing (including money, automobile and relatives), and go for a wilderness adventure. He makes many friends along the way, before his final solitude in Alaska. The great part is that it is based upon a true story.
A great thumbs up.

The Kingdom

Now, here is a Man's movie! Jamie Fox is the lead FBI agent, after the Saudi bombing, killing hundreds of American's. The movie is like Bourne Identity, with the action and shooting, except many more people are killed. Aside from the ending, this is a good against evil story, the true fight against terrorism, which somehow got lost after 9/11.

Another film review, yes, and this one is worth seeing. Although I was not taken in by the premise that a gunman, with a vicious gang, would allow himself not only to be brought to justice and murder his entire gang for trying to rescue him, the performances and dialog were worth the $10.
Russel Crow was amusing as the gunman, and his dialog with his capture.
A good western, almost as good as a Clint Eastwood one.

Superbad Movie review

I saw this movie on Monday evening. Really a great movie, full of memories of horny teenagers in High School. High schoolers can relate to this movie, much more then most of the recent comedies, depicting "younger" adults in fictionious situations.
At the end, as each are telling each other how much they love one another, it is just soo funny, but too many can relate to this feeling as we accomplish our goal of "surviving" high school.
Please go see this movie, rated R, and think about the comradely and subtle events which they find themselves in.

As for the notion that just because the continents are called North and South America doesn’t mean anyone has adopted the term “American” but the citizens of the USA. Or am I missing something? When has a Brazilian called his or herself an American or even a Brazilian American. I just hate this bogus argument. I hope you were just joking.

Harry Potter #5

Yes, I went to see HP5 with my children. I can say, I liked it better then #4, but not as well as the first 2. It was for older children, but interesting for adults too. It was more of a suspense movie, then one of adventure. Many characters, so you will need some background to the original movies or the books, otherwise you will get confused who is who.
Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) is now 18, so this is about the last age to be in school, as I don't remember any 18 yr olds in the first film, at Hogwarts.

Speed boat races at Lido beach

Grand Prix of boat races was in Sarasota at Lido beach, and your favorite blogger was there, of course. These boats get up to 160 mph, pretty fast for a car, now imagine a boat on choppy water. The course is about 6.5 miles around. And these helicopters are following right above these boats, no more then 20 feet above. I think they are more crazy then the boat drivers.

Orlando theme parks

Went to Universal Studio theme park last week. Although a bit warm, not a large croud or wait times. One ticket will also get you into both parks (island adventure) which is right next door. The best rides at studios were: Mummy, Shrek 4, earthquake. Island Adventure best ride, at least that we went on was Hulk roller coaster. Really cool take off too.

Hanibal Rising:
Not recommended! Hanibal as a child/teenager, is no where near the level of perfection that Anthony Hopkins performed. Not such a bad script, but lacked integrity from the actor playing Hanibal.
Smokin' aces:
A new movie, I watched the other night. A really good cast of players: Ben Affleck, Ray Liotta, Andy Garcia, etc. It is similar to the valley, one story, but character scenes leading up to the final climax. Along the way, the characters are funny, and entertaining, to say the very least.
To have so many hit men, with radically different characters, takes wonderful direction and editting. Lot's of violence, but funny along the way. Rent this movie, I give it my "Go see it" review.

Buddhism

While in Niagara Falls, I came across the Buddha temple and gallery. I was quite impresses. I think the pursuit of compassion and enlightenment is close to what I believe in. Now aside from the belief of reincarnation, which is really not so different from believing in Adam and Eve, or Hell, the Philosophy is quite interesting. I think I will look into it more.

This temple is called ten thousand buddha, and it does have over 10,000 buddha statues in it. As you are not allow to take pictures inside the temple (and I did respect their wishes), I took one of the outside.

Niagra Falls

What a great place!!! I am on the Canadian side, and find the whole city great. Yes, there are many tourist attractions here, but they are well placed in only certain areas. The whole area is surrounded by a park, and there is a long park running almost the entire river to the ocean. If you come, bring your bike. There are biking trails for many miles with beautiful scenery. The falls themselves are overwhelming as well. A constant sparkling of water is all around you, while you are looking at the falls.

This is a picture from the Canadian side. You can literally jump right in, if you want to end it right away. I don't see how anyone would think they could survive a fall like that.

Sopranos final?

Can you believe the final of Sopranos? What a cope out! Not killing any of the Sopranos family off, was surprising, and suspect a movie. I am not opposed to a movie, and even keeping Tony alive, it's just that it didn't close his life, or the series. A movie cannot put closure to an 8 year series either.

USS WASP (Fleet week)

First time on a live US Battleship. Really cool, the people on the ship are actually the sailors and marines working on the ship. They have all of the live aircraft and tanks, humvees as well. You can literally climb all over the equipment. Pickup a 150MM munition, even a missle. Unbelievable!! All this, and it's free to board. Well, you can't beat that with a stick!

Maroon 5's new album finally hits the stores. I really like it, downloaded it today.
The last good movie I saw was 28 weeks later. As good as the first one, with more plot and more action. The first was not as scarry, but was interesting because the zombies are very fast runners. Makes for a good time. Not for younger children, or people who wet beds :-)

Movie Review - Alpha Dog

Rated R, 2006
Movie was excellent, with a cast of unknowns, including Justin Temberlake as Frankie. The movie is based upon a true story based upon the killing of a 15 yr old, who's brother owed a drug dealer money and was held for ransom.
The movie is disturbing, as it brings the viewer into the lives of these people, which you really don't hate, but should. At the end, it is not predictable, although you knew what to expect.
This is the way movies should be done, and directed, no glory, just bring the viewer into the lives of its characters, with little outside interferance.
